Each unit contains two lessons designed to take approximately 15–20 minutes for Kindergarten-Grade 2, and 25–30 minutes for Grades 3–5. Every unit has a lesson where a mentor text guides critical thinking and collaborative conversation. A third lesson in each unit is a performance task in which students demonstrate evidence of their learning, designed to take approximately 20-30 minutes for Kindergarten and Grade 1, and 35-45 minutes for Grades 3–5. There are 25 lessons per grade each year.

Following the completion of all eight units, schools are guided on facilitating an IDEA Showcase. This learning celebration is a powerful way to gather community and reflect on growth that has transpired over the academic year.

The IDEA Foundations K-5 Curriculum is purchased as a single K–5 school-wide license, allowing schools to align the program with all grades they serve. With any license purchase, the cost is the same whether you use one of the grades or all of them. The program is subscription-based with a one-year license.
